Shih Chon - Bichon Frise/Shih Tzu
Read the attached for our
Other names we have found people using for this type mix are : "Teddy Bear, Zuchon, Bich Tzu and Shichon ".
***************************************************************************
All of our pets enjoy the freedom of large open areas to romp in. And, in general, our Bichon lived with Bichon, and Shih Tzu with Shih Tzu. However, sometimes our pets had off-days, just like children will, and they did not get along with their playmates. It was then the time to find them new playmates and we would put a Bichon with a Shih Tzu. It was at this un-intentional period of time that the occasional mix occurred. So, these "Shih Chon*" were not planned or designed, they just sort of happened. Then along came Beau, a little 9 pound Bichon. Beau loved all women equally and would visit anyone who would welcome them to their chamber, so to speak. Unfortunately, short of locking him up, it was impossible to stop his love escapades, so more mixes appeared.
Over the course of many years (it has been over 10 since Beau's first love-tryst), we found that not only did we love and accept our accidental mix, but others fell in love too. As our photos hit the internet, and more and more puppies hit the streets, we had requests and wait lists for the Shih Chon. Some would wait up to a year wanting only a "Shih Chon", or wanting another to add to their dog family. Since they had the darling personalities of our purebreds and were non-shedding they fit the need for someone looking for a unique pet with the qualities of the Bichon Frise and the SHIH TZU. In general, we feel the Bichon adds intelligence to the Shih Tzu, and the Shih Tzu adds independent playfulness and confidence to the Bichon. Since each puppy is special in its own way, you can be sure an adopted Shih Chon will be a one-of-a-kind pet with exceptional personality and charm just like their purebred parents.
Like our Shih Tzu; Shih Chons come in a variety of color variations. However, we primarily referred to two color options: Gold and White, or Black and White, some will have more coloring then others, and occasionally we have even have pure black ones. In general, the coat will usually be soft and wavy, a combination of the Bichon Frise soft curl and the Shih Tzu soft straight coat. Occasionally, our mixes look almost exactly like their purebred cousins. In either case the coat will have to be regularly maintained and groomed just like their purebred parents. And they can be considered a non-shedding pet as well.
For obvious reasons, Shih Chon do not come with registration papers. They are a mix breed, not a recognized breed with registration. We have however created a PETigree for our Shih Chon, which will not only list their genetic lineage, but in many cases will also include photos of the parents and grandparents!
Please note, not all referring to a Shih Chon are referring to a Bichon/Shih Tzu mix. On our internet search we found some who breed multiple dogs and use the same term (ie a Schnauzzer and Maltese may be called a Shichon). Our Shih Chon come strictly from purebred Shih Tzu (AKC Champion lines) and Bichon (Also AKC and/or APR registered). The same parents we use to make our purebred Shih Tzu and Bichons. Upon request, we can provide a copy of the pedigree on the parents. The health guarantees are the same for our mixes and our purebred puppies.
Due to the current demand for these adorable little fluffs, we now breed for them on a regular basis. Estimated time of wait from time of breeding to adoption of any puppy is 5 months. With current demand you may need to be on a wait list to adopt a Shih Chon. Please keep in mind, both boys and girls have equally pleasing personalities. And a boy, if neutered before 4 months of age, should not mark territory. To make your life easier, we try to neuter all our male puppies at 9 weeks of age, prior to placing them in new homes. If you are adamant on a certain gender and/or color, it could take more than one breeding and you could be on our "wait list" for up to a year or more.
*We originally called Bichon Mom/Shih Tzu Dad - "Bich Tzu"; Shih Tzu Mom/Bichon Dad - "Shih Chon" and our Pomeranian Mom/Shih Tzu dad "Pom Tzu" and Pomeranian Mom/Bichon Dad "Pom Chon". We no longer raise Pomeranians, and felt using two names on the Bichon/Shih Tzu mix was confusing, so we chose Shih Chon as it was easier to pronounce. Bich Tzu sounded like a sneeze, lol.

OWNER COMMENTS:
"I'd also like to say BIG thanks for breeding mixes. It is so hard to find a non-recreational breeder that has mix pups at a reasonable cost, takes the time and effort to ensure they are placed in good homes, selects moms/dads from good gene pools to ensure healthy pups, and ..... I won't buy pups that haven't had their 1st set of shots, aren't 10-12 weeks old, and have unknown dads. Sadly that eliminates a lot. elizabeth COS, CO"

"Pam, we recently (4 months ago) got one of the male Bich-Tzu's (Dakota) and we love him (I believe he is the one on your website). He has an outstanding character and loves to be with us. When we picked him up he weighted 4.6 pounds, he currently weights 9.8 pounds. He is healthy, intelligent and very active... please keep us in mind if you have another litter of the Bich-Tzu's as we would be interested in another male. " Dan, Schriever AFB

"Hi Pam,
I wanted to drop you a note to let you know how the puppy is doing... He is such
a wonderful little guy. He has already doubled in size and is coming along well
with the housebreaking...
In case you get tons of inquiries from people who have seen him in Breckenridge,
it is because every where we go everyone wants to know what he is and if there
are more available...He loves the water when I am watering my flowers and has
had several unscheduled "baths" as a result...Again MANY MANY thanks for this
lovely new addition to our family. "

Bear (Pom Chon) has settled in nicely. He is the most lovable little animal we have ever had. He already gets it when it comes to potty training. He only had 1 accident and it was our fault...He never cried through the first night. He stayed in his kennel next to me with my arm in his kennel. Second night he went into his kennel all by himself and my arm wasn't necessary at all... This morning we spent just 5 minutes working on "Come" before his breakfast and used his food as treats. He's still a fuzzy about what he is supposed to do. We'll keep working on that until he gets it before we move on to "sit".
