ARE YOU READY FOR THE COLD WEATHER?
When you walk out the door for work, school or errands, are you grabbing a coat, boots and mittens? If so, when you put your pet out to do his "duty" do you do the same? If you have children, I am sure you worry if they will catch cold. Make sure you give the same consideration to your 4-legged child, he is just as much at risk as the 2-legged ones. Most of your pet supply stores carry all sorts of sweaters, as well as booties you can dress your pet up in - remember, it's not just for a cute look, it's for their health!

VETERINARIAN IDENTIFICATION
A client brought a litter of puppies to my veterinary clinic for inoculations and worming. As the look-alike pups squirmed over and under one another in their box, I realized it would be difficult to tell the treated ones from the rest. I turned on the water faucet, wet my fingers, and moistened each dog's head when I had finished.
After the fourth puppy, I noticed my hitherto talkative client had grown silent. As I sprinkled the last pup's head, the woman leaned forward and whispered, "I didn't know they had to be baptized."

I REALLY HATE BEING MISUNDERSTOOD
"I pulled into a crowded parking lot and rolled down the car windows to make
sure my dog had fresh air. She was stretched out on the back seat, and I wanted
to impress upon her that she must remain there. I walked to the curb backward,
pointing my finger at the car and saying emphatically, Now you stay. Do you hear
me? Stay! Stay!"
The driver of a nearby car, perhaps noting that I am a blonde, gave me a strange
look and said, "Why don't you just put it in park?"

Let's talk about Hypoglycemia...
Is your puppy eating and drinking enough? Do not believe the rumor that a dog will eat when he is hungry. A puppy who does not eat will die! It is important that you make sure your new puppy is eating and drinking properly. A puppy will gain weight rapidly during his first months of life. To do so properly, you need to maintain proper diet for him. The smaller the puppy, the more frequent his need to eat. For example, our "teenies" need small amounts of food a minimum of 5-6 times a day. This is the main reason we keep them until they are older. A healthy 10 week old puppy needs to eat 3 meals a day. Additionally, they need calcium, so we often add cottage cheese to their daily diet. A puppy that is going hypoglycemic will be lethargic and his gums will be gray to white rather than pink and rosy. If you have a puppy going hypoglycemic on you, immediately administer some form of sugar to him - Karo syrup, maple syrup or sugar water. You can go as much as 1/2 tsp - 1 tsp(.05 - 1.0 cc) or sugar every 10-15 minutes until he turns around. What do you do if your puppy doesn't want to eat? You do whatever it takes to make him eat. Give him something yummy, straight canned, cottage cheese, hamburger and rice, vanilla yogurt or even vanilla ice cream! Stand on your head if this is what it takes! And if he misses more than a day's worth of meals, even refusing the yummies? Take him to the vet - something is up and it needs immediate attention! When in doubt, give us a call - remember, we are the grandparents, and are concerned about your puppies health and welfare.

LOOKING FOR A PUPPY FOR CHRISTMAS? Did you stop to think about how dangerous this time of year is for a puppy? The tree, tinsel, excitement, and unopened packages can be a big danger for your new family member. It will make housebreaking difficult as well, as it is near impossible to keep a schedule during hectic holiday season. It would be better to wait until after the holidays if you are unable to adopt prior to the holidays.

A DOG NAMED LUCKY
Mary and her husband Jim had a dog, Lucky. Lucky was a real character.
Whenever Mary and Jim had company come for a weekend visit, they would
warn their friends not to leave their luggage open because Lucky would
help himself to whatever struck his fancy.
Inevitably someone would forget and something would come up missing. Mary
or Jim would go to Lucky's toy box in the basement and there the treasure
would be, amid all of Lucky's favorite toys. Lucky always stashed his
finds in his toy box, and he was very particular that his toys stay in the
box.
It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer. Something told her
she was going to die of this disease...she was just sure it was fatal. She
scheduled the double mastectomy, fear riding her shoulders.
The night before she was to go to the hospital she cuddled with Lucky. A
thought struck her...what would happen to Lucky? Although the
three-year-old dog liked Jim, he was Mary's dog through and through. If I
die, Lucky will be abandoned, Mary thought. He won't understand that I
didn't want to leave him.
The thought made her sadder than thinking of her own death. The double
mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors had anticipated, and Mary
was hospitalized for over two weeks.
Jim took Lucky for his evening walk faithfully but the dog just drooped,
whining and miserable.
Finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived
home, Mary was so exhausted she couldn't even make it up the steps to her
bedroom.
Jim made his wife comfortable on the couch and left her to nap.
Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn't come to her when she called. It
made Mary sad, but sleep soon overcame her and she dozed. When Mary woke,
for a second she couldn't understand what was wrong. She couldn't move her
head, and her body felt heavy and hot. Panic soon gave way to laughter
though when Mary realized the problem. She was covered, literally
blanketed, in every treasure Lucky owned! While she had slept, the
sorrowing dog had made trip after trip to the basement and back bringing
his beloved mistress his favorite things in life. He had covered her with
his love.
Mary forgot about dying. Instead she and Lucky began living again,
walking further and further together every night.
It's been 12 years now, and Mary is still cancer-free.
Lucky? He still steals treasures and stashes them in his toy box, but Mary
remains his greatest treasure.
Live everyday to the fullest...because every day is a blessing from God!

TINY
TOTS: PHOTO GALLERY
Want a "pocket puppy"? Two things to keep in mind,
#1: "The smaller the dog, the larger the price tag" Quoted from Channel 2 news
#2: The smaller the dog, the more intense the care for the dog.
A Tiny Tot is not a "runt". A runt is usually a puppy that is born smaller than his siblings and from the first is noticeable in size.
A Tiny Tot, on the other hand, is born the same size as his siblings, then his growth will slow and he will remain smaller than his siblings. A Tiny Tot should be genetically smaller due to the small genetics in his background. ie: his parents and/or grandparents are small.
